Conservation in Action

Conservation in Action presents
Myth and Mystery of the Great White Shark
Seeing Deeper into the World of the White Shark

Since its release in 1975, the movie JAWS has made millions fearful of the elusive great white shark. Join Dr. Gregory Skomal, an accomplished marine biologist who has been actively involved in the study of sharks for more than 30 years, as he debunks the white sharks ‘killer’ reputation.

Tuesday, October 17 | 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Mystic Aquarium’s Main Gallery

Dive into the world of the white shark and discover the truth behind the history, biology and physiology of the species. Of the shark and ray species assessed by scientists for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 25% are threatened or near-threatened with extinction.

While white shark populations have been studied for many years in California, not much is known on the species’ presence along the east coast. With an influx of white sharks off the coast of Cape Cod since 2009, scientists have been able to study this shiver of sharks and gather valuable information on the population. Discover how Dr. Skomal’s work in Cape Code and use of new technologies are providing novel insights into this historically mysterious species.

Sea Scare

Sea Scare returns with a magical twist: An evil sea witch has descended on Mystic Aquarium!

Every weekend in October starting the 14th, Sea Scare – a family-friendly Halloween adventure at Mystic Aquarium – casts magic, mystery and marvels throughout the Aquarium’s campus. Water wizards welcome all who dare to stop the wicked sea witch. Travel the outdoor exhibits to hear Tails of the Deep where animals and wizards work to defeat the witch and her spells. Step inside a fortune teller’s lair to learn your fate from the revered crystal ball – will your wizardly powers be enough to tame the sea witch or will she continue to rule the Aquarium? Discover the underwater world of her mystical castle where cob webs and skeletons and shells drip from above. Be sure to step in to Wizard University where you can craft your own wizard hat and wand before learning how to cast your own magical spells at the water wizard’s spell station. All of this hocus pocus and more takes place during Sea Scare at Mystic Aquarium!

Sea Scare is free for Aquarium members and with general admission.
